DGI, BPS and electronic invoicing are connected parts of starting a business, but they do different jobs. Obtaining a RUT does not by itself mean every setup step is complete.
1. Fix the activity and real start date
Registration deadlines are tied to the start of activity. Late registration can have consequences, so do not use an arbitrary date merely to complete a form.
2. Choose structure and tax treatment
Determine sole proprietorship versus company and verify eligibility for the intended tax regime before submitting the registration.
3. Complete DGI-BPS registration
Qualifying sole proprietorships can use BPS's coordinated online DGI-BPS service. SAS has a separate route, including a fully digital process for qualifying cases.
4. Set up electronic invoicing
VAT taxpayers are generally electronic issuers, subject to specific exceptions. Choose the invoicing solution and complete the applicable CFE onboarding before issuing documents.
5. Build the compliance calendar
- DGI advances and payments.
- BPS and Fonasa contributions.
- Periodic and annual returns.
- Electronic-document corrections.
- Effective dates for later activity, family or regime changes.
