Starting a business as a couple in Uruguay: spouse, children and Fonasa

Business participation and healthcare coverage are separate decisions. What expat couples should review before registering.

Back to blog

Expat couples often mix two questions: who genuinely participates in the business and who needs healthcare coverage. They do not necessarily require the same solution.

Do not add a family member only to optimise contributions

If both people genuinely work or own the business, registration should reflect that. If only one performs the activity, adding the other artificially can create obligations rather than solve them.

Fonasa depends on family status

BPS contribution rates vary with income and whether the contributor has children or a spouse/partner without their own SNIS coverage.

Review

  • Who actually works and invoices.
  • Who owns the business.
  • Each adult's SNIS status.
  • Dependent children.
  • Other employment/self-employment.
  • Need for liability separation.
