Fonasa for independents and expats: children, spouse and family contribution rates

How family status affects Fonasa, who may be covered by SNIS and what newly arrived families should verify.

Back to blog

For an expat family, Fonasa is not just another tax line. Contributions finance the National Health Insurance system (SNIS), and family status can affect both coverage and the personal contribution rate.

Family members who may be covered

BPS identifies dependent children under 18, older children with disabilities and a spouse or partner without their own SNIS coverage among the family members who may be covered under the applicable rules.

Family status changes the rate

The general BPS table combines a 3% basic contribution with additional rates. Above 2.5 BPC, the published totals are 4.5% with no children or dependent spouse, 6% with children, 6.5% with a dependent spouse and no children, and 8% with both children and a dependent spouse. Lower-income and special situations have different figures.

What a relocating family should record

  • Whether the owner already has SNIS coverage through another activity.
  • Whether the spouse/partner has their own coverage.
  • Dependent children and which parent generates coverage.
  • Health-insurance code used by BPS.
  • Changes in employment or family circumstances.

For exclusive Personal Services activity, BPS also has advance and minimum-contribution rules, so simply multiplying invoices by a headline percentage may be wrong.
