Freelancers / 12 min

How much tax does a freelancer pay in Uruguay on USD 2,000, 5,000 or 10,000 a month?

Useful scenarios without a fake flat-tax promise: IRPF/IRAE, VAT, service exports, BPS and Fonasa.

Monthly revenue alone cannot produce an accurate Uruguayan tax number. Two freelancers billing the same USD amount may have different results because of service type, VAT export treatment, IRPF/IRAE, legal form, BPS/Fonasa and family status.

USD 2,000/month

For personal services, IRPF and Personal Services VAT are common starting points, plus BPS/Fonasa. A qualifying service export can change VAT without automatically eliminating income tax or social contributions.

USD 5,000/month

At this level it becomes particularly useful to project the full year. IRPF is progressive rather than a flat invoice percentage, and a legally available IRAE option should be compared using the whole business profile.

USD 10,000/month

Annual income may approach or exceed regime thresholds. DGI states that personal-service income above 4,000,000 UI triggers mandatory IRAE from the following fiscal year.

Why there is no honest 'USD X = tax Y' table

A useful estimate needs activity, start date, local/foreign customers, place of use, expenses, withholdings, current regime, e-invoicing and BPS/Fonasa data.
